Random Old Records Podcast #26 is Out

Well shit, has it really been a month already since I last posted an episode of Random Old Records? Guess so! Anyway, here is Random Old Records Podcast #26, and it's a bit all over the place. It kicks off with a set of classic glam rock by Mott The Hoople, Sparks, and others, then runs through a whole bunch of new and old psych and prog from the Black Angels, Darker My Love, Ween, Nektar, and Caravan, and it all ends up with a blazing set of 90s punk rock from Rancid and NOFX. WEIRD, but it all seemed to make sense when I was putting it together...

Brody's Militia - Covered in Violence LP Preview

Demonologists Review by Crucial Blast

Photobucket

DEMONOLOGISTS - Sermons Of Death And Eternal Damnation (Waves Of Decay)

Review by CRUCIAL BLAST:

I've recently gotten hooked on this Midwestern duo, which includes one of the guys from the weirdo black metal band Ensepulchred who released a couple of albums on Autopsy Kitchen a few years ago. Demonologists also has it's roots in black metal, but these guys take it to an extreme new level of chaos, going straight into black industrial noise territory with a brand of hellish overdriven distorto-death-worship that pretty much crosses right over into harsh noise. I listen to a lot of ultra noisy black metal-influenced stuff like Wold and Vegas Martyrs and Nekrasov, but the hissing black fog that Demonologists conjure out of their smoking speakers goes way beyond even the skull-shredding din that those bands traffic in. ... Brody's Militia/Rupture EP Available Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Wrap your slobbering ears around the throbbing shaft of this interstellar fuckfest over ten years in the making! The avenging Aussie hatecore godfathers crawl from their cosmic deathcamp to lock horns with the reigning scumfuck overlords of American hardrock bloodlust! This EP is like a particularly unwashed session of ass to mouth with your ex-girlfriend carved into glorious black plastic! Kill yourself repeatedly as chainsaw abortion specialists BRODY'S MILITIA plow through five seething covers of fastcore era RUPTURE classics with unrelenting speed and a massive studio recording. Flip the fucker and get assaulted by prime unreleased live cuts from RUPTURE captured in 1996 at their venomous best. The demented brilliance of Gus Chamber lives on through a totally booze blasted bit of banana-bending brutality! This long overdue and totally fucked up meeting of the masterminds of filth comes wrapped in an eye-gouging full color cover and has been lovingly served to you morbid fucken apeforms via New York pornography peddlers Haunted Hotel Records! A bad dream come true for aficionados of aural atrocities and an absolute must-buy record for fans of being violently sodomized in the sleaziest layer [of] hell. First one hundred copies on clear wax."

I Fail & Fucked for Life Reviewed in Profane Existence Issue #60

I FAILhighways… CD

Straight outta Cincinnati, OH comes I FAIL, a three-piece hardcore group with a smattering of 90’s screamo (sorry to use the term which now has negative connotations, but it’s appropriate in this context) breakdowns and quiet part with talking vocals / loud part with yelling dynamics. Those familiar with the early Ebullition catalog, or fans of French screamo groups like FINGERPRINT or ANOMIE will probably enjoy this very much. There’s also an undeniable FUGAZI influence in the bass riffs and some of the vocal stylings, particularly in the track “The Giraffed.” While some of the more “singy” background vocals became a bit much, I liked the dynamics and production quality of this recording a great deal. It’s nice to hear a band not afraid to click off the distortion for a few measures only to kick it back in at breakneck speed and with much screamy fanfare. Minimal packaging on the enveloped CD with a color lyric insert, this release is available in cassette and 10” format as well. Five tracks left me curious and I’d be interested to see what a full-length from this group sounds like. (Rob Hanna)

FUCKED FOR LIFEEat Shit or Die CD

From the burning hellfire pits of Cincinnati, OH descends the beast known as FUCKED FOR LIFE on this 8-track CD. While the CRASS typeface threw me off at first, I was expecting some fairly PC crustcore, and was surprised to hear some fairly raging d-beat punk blasting out of my speakers. I’m not sure what “Eat Shit OR Die” means, usually the two are coupled together but I suppose this is the age of options, and I appreciate that. The first four tracks are unreleased material while the latter were put out as a demo. Apparently this group is now defunct which is unfortunate because this is actually really fun to drink to, the choruses of these songs are kind of corny sing-a-longs — “All we drink is whiskey and beer/All we know is distortion and death,” but it’s so well put together that it harkens to groups like UNCURBED or TOLSHOCK. This is straight up party punk, and I’m totally into it. (Rob Hanna)

New local hardcore punk bands!

Veterans (Bandcamp site)
(Regular site)
Melodic hardcore punk/screamo from Letha, Andreas (ex-The Final Nail, N.T.G.), Simón Sotelo, Phil Smith (Silent Tongues, The Brothers Cranioplex, ex-Pageant of Snakes, Death Through Adam, Eustace), and Joe Foster (ex-N.T.G.).

Overseer
Um, they sound like Integrity on Seasons in the Size of Days. 'nuff said...  John Willwerth and Zach Colina (both ex-Still Crossed) and some other guys are in it.  I believe all of them are straightedge.  Listen to their stuff on their site, go see them live, and pick up a free CD demo, which has a patch with Aleister Crowley on it.

I Fail
Screamo from Kaleb Keefer, Eric Sunderman (both ex-Fucked for Life), and Patrick Cost (Lost Hands Found Fingers).  They have a 10"/CD/tape out and have gone on a tour to the west coast (or Texas, whatever...).

Captives
Hardcore punk from Eric Sunderman, Dane (ex-Tumorfeast and x666x xGoat Semen Baptismx x666x), Robby Wright (ex-Still Crossed, Tumorfeast, Black Dove, Paralyzer, and a bunch of moshcore bands), and Dustin Bingaman (White Walls, ex-Order 66).  They have a tape out.  It's $3 ppd, limited to 100 copies.  You can download it from their site, too.

Silo
D-beat hardcore from Eric Sunderman, Dennis Berendts (Nukkehammer, Vile Gash, and ex-The Awakening, Black Dove, Dismal, etc), and Robby Wright.

Blue Rock Tavern and Speakeasy - RIP

The Blue Rock Tavern @ Speakeasy has been closed.  Landlord changed the locks and put up signs that said it's closed.  So now the last-ditch venue for booking punk, hardcore, and metal shows is gone.

This will probably get a lot of comments.
